Find Quality Cannabis in Denver

September 1, 2019

Your guide to finding quality cannabis in Denver.

Whether you’re new to the world of buying weed, or you just need a refresher, check out these tips for determining cannabis quality.

Smell

Good quality flower should have a distinct, pungent, odor. That’s why smell is on the top of our list. If you want to know if your cannabis makes the cut, give it a whiff. An inferior product will have a dull, grass or hay-like smell. This would be the result of a plant that was poorly cured. Moreover, strong-smelling marijuana indicates high terpene content. Terpenes are responsible for the smell, taste, and effect of cannabis. When aromas are strong, it means that terpenes are present. Lots of terpenes mean high potency and dankness.

Color

Cannabis has a little in common with fresh produce. You can usually tell if it’s good based on visual cues. In this case, color is a major factor. Go for green. High-quality cannabis should be predominantly green, light or dark. Sometimes, accent colors are present. Flecks of purple, orange, pink, or blue are all okay. Never, however, should marijuana be brown. Brown weed is bad weed. Brown can come from additives that should not be ingested, like mold, chemicals, or pesticides.

Crystals

High-quality marijuana is dusted with crystals, which are easy to spot and identify. These crystals are ripe trichomes, resin glands where the goods terpenes and cannabinoids are stored. One of the easiest ways to determine the general quality of your cannabis is to look for a frosty layer with thick and shiny trichomes. Pay attention to the trichome color. This indicates ripeness. The best coloration is milky white with a hint of amber. If the crystals are more amber than white, the cannabis was harvested too late. A milky-white layer indicates a cannabinoid-rich plant. The more trichome crystals, the more potent the plant.

Structure

Cannabis typically follows a specific structure, so it’s good to know about shape variation. Generally, Indica should be tight and dense, while Sativa light and fluffy. Hybrid strains usually show a mix of characteristics. Regardless, avoid cannabis that is airy and with visible stems. Also, Sativa buds tend to have more small, orange and red hairs, known as pistils.

Seeds/Stems

Keep a lookout for seeds as they are a sign of poor-quality cannabis. Seeds are good if you’re hoping to grow your own plant, otherwise, they just add extra weight. There should be no more than a few stems in the bud. It’s a bad sign if there are none, but even worse if there are too many. Overall, the rule is no seeds and barely-any stems, resulting in fresh, thick, smokable flower.

Moisture and Texture

The feel of marijuana can tell you a lot about its quality. The flower should be balanced, not too moist and not too dry. It should also be a bit sticky, due to the resin. If your herb is too dry, it will burn too quickly. If it’s too wet, it could grow mildew or mold. The right storage is an important preventative measure.
